The 23/24 season has been a rollercoaster of emotions. With 3 different coaches and the second worst first half of the season in history, fans feared the worst.
19 points in the first 19 league matches with a record of 5 wins, 4 draws, and 10 losses, scoring 27 goals while conceding 38. These numbers set new records, marking the worst performance in terms of losses and goals conceded.
The focus was on the numerous goals conceded and murmurs arose regarding the defensive line. With long-term injuries to Foyth and Pedraza, the rest of the squad's defenders had to step up. Kiko Femenía, Jorge Cuenca, Alberto Moreno, and Yerson Mosquera became unexpected protagonists of the Yellow Submarine's defense.
They had very different profiles: two experienced players with extensive careers, a club youth product, and a young Colombian on loan from Wolves after a season in North American football.
Yerson Mosquera, 23 years old, a fast and strong central defender standing at 1.88 meters tall, arrived at Villarreal CF on loan without much fanfare. Embracing his role as a substitute, Mosquera seized the opportunities Marcelino (and his teammates' injuries) presented him.
Fans questioned whether the Colombian would adapt to the jump in quality from MLS to La Liga.
After a shaky start, Mosquera adapted to the system, his teammates, and Marcelino's style of play, and in our opinion, he has earned his place in the squad. Yerson is one of Colombia's most promising players. By the end of the season, he had played in 17 matches for Villarreal, accumulating over 1200 minutes, scoring 3 goals, and providing an assist to Sørloth against Madrid with an exquisite cross using the outside of his foot.
The player himself has expressed his desire to continue with the Castellón team, and the club is working on his incorporation. According to Transfermarkt, Mosquera's value has increased from 3.5 to 6 million euros after his season at Villarreal.
¿What did you think of Mosquera's season? Would you like him to continue at the club?
